Our Coordinator Christian Rein from the Danish Tecnological Institute interviewed on 8th of February by Ingeniøren, Denmark´s leading technology and science media outlet. The Ingeniøren Magazine is now more than 130 years old and is still growing significantly.
During the Interview Christian Rein showcased our mission to create sustainable materials for electronic components in order to make it easier to recycle them. Old electronic devices are made of hard-to-recycle- components and are covered in valuable materials like silver and gold. We aim to change that, by creating electronic parts that can be pulled out and be recycled instead of becoming just useless waste, where only a small piece of the cake gets recycled and reused. Our approach involves transitioning to environmentally sustainable alternatives, notably substituting silver with copper. This strategic shift not only aligns with ecological principles but also reduces the ecological impact associated with material extraction.
For instance, one example is that we are replacing silver in electronic components with a specialized copper ink and nanotechnology that can be easily extracted and recycled at the end of their lifecycle. Our vision is to establish a circular system where outdated electronics contribute to the recreation of new and valuable components.
Sustain a Print aims to improve each phase of the recycling process, including materials, ink, electronics, and recycling. The idea is to establish a circular system in which resources from outdated devices are recycled into new components.
Our Coordinator, Christian Rein, stated the following: ´´ It’s too early to make big promises. Nature’s laws might make it hard to scale up what works in the lab to industry level. The hope is that the project can bring more electronics production back to Europe, considering health, the environment, and reducing dependence on other countries. ´´
